Milk Prices Moo-ve Higher
Were you shocked at the price the last time you went to buy milk? So were we – and the cost of milk products is expected to continue to climb, possibly reaching an all time high. There are many facets to this topic, and we at the Springfield Creamery are concerned about the impact of rising dairy prices so we wanted to take the opportunity to share with you what we understand about the sudden increase in milk prices that we are all experiencing.
Why are Milk Costs Rising?
- Increased shipping costs from high fuel prices
- Soaring feed prices as more acres go to corn and fewer are available for hay and soybeans. This is in part due to a higher demand for corn-based ethanol fuel.
- Global economies have changed, increasing the demand for U.S. dairy products in international markets. For instance, Australia and New Zealand lost dairy herds to drought and are now seeking U.S. dairy products.
What is the overall outcome?
- The cost of a gallon of milk could rise to $5 this year
- Federal school lunch programs will feel the effects
- According to Western United Dairymen, higher feed costs in 2006 pushed 5% of California's dairy producers to exit the business.

What does this mean for Springfield Creamery and Nancy's?
In all our years of being in the creamery business (and there are currently 47 such years and counting...) the cost increases we are experiencing are unprecedented.
Since May 2007 we have seen a nearly 60% increase in our cost of fluid milk and milk powder. Remember, all you will find in Nancy's dairy products is milk and milk powder ( and of course those live beneficial cultures!)- no pectins, no gelatins, no stabilizers to set the body of our yogurt. Sure would be less expensive at this point to use a pectin, gelatin or a stabilizer – but it has always been our goal to feed people the best food available- and we feel that fresh milk and milk powder make the best genuine food. So, despite extreme milk prices, trust that we are 'riding the wave' and will continue to bring you the highest quality cultured dairy product possible.
We hope we may have answered some your questions regarding the prices you are seeing as you stand in front of the dairy cooler at your local store.
Our family and employees continue to appreciate your support of Nancy's – thank you.
With kind regards,
The Kesey Family
